KASARGOD PARLIAMENT CONSTITUENCY

There is only one Parliament Constituency. This constituency consists of seven Legislative Assembly segments. They are Manjeshwar, Kasargod, Udma, Hosdurg, Trikkaripur of Kasargod district; and Payyannur, Taliparamba of Kannur district.

Sri. P Karunakaran, Member of Parliament, Kasaragod was born on 20.04.1945 at Nelliadukkam, Kiliyalam, Kinanoor Karinthalam panchayath of Hosdurg Taluk. Kiliyalath Thalappattupurayil Koran, father and Puthiyioor Chirutha, mother. Had primary education from A.L.P School, Nelliyadkam, A.U.P School, Pothavoor and there after from Govt. High School, Kayyur, Rajas High School, Nileshwar. He had his Degree from the Govt. College, Kasaragod and his Post graduation in Economics from M.A College, Kothamangalam, Ernakulam. During his school/college days he held the office of School Pupil Leader at the A.U.P School Pothavoor, G.H.S Kayyur. He was the member of volleyball team of Rajas High School, Nileshwar &  Govt. College Kasaragod. He  held the office of the Secretary of Malayalam Association and Fine Arts Society also.

He was elected and become M.L.A to the Kerala Legislative Assembly during 1977 and 1980 from Trikarpur constituency. He also held the post of Member of Calicut University, Public Accounts Committee, K.S.F.E Director Board, Select Committee, Kerala  Granthasala  Sangham.   In 1991 he became the General Manager, Deshabhimani Daily.

He was the active worker of K.S.F. Member of District committee, and Block President for a long time. He was the Vice President of C.I.T.U, Kannur District and Member of All India General Council of C.I.T.U.

He became Member of C.P.I (M) in 1964. He served as Secretary, Local Committee, Area Committee and Member of District Committee of erstwhile Kannur District. He went underground  for 17 months during emergency. He is now serving as Member, State Committee, State Secretariat and Central Committee of C.P.I (M).  He organized many trade union activities and  led  many public agitations.

Married to Smt Laila, daughter of Famous CPI(M) Leaders Late A.K.Gopalan and Late Sushila Gopalan  he has one daughter, Madhavi.
